DJ Mustard Releases Rules for Studio Sessions

DJ Mustard wants you to know that when you enter his studio, there are a few guidelines you must adhere to. Friday, the Grammy winning producer posted some rules that artists must follow should they want to get in the booth and work with him. The list appears to range in everything from working out and keeping a positive attitude:

As mentioned earlier, this seems like the most random list that anybody could come up with. However, his list might’ve possibly been rivaled by another artists’ rules. TDE rapper Schoolboy Q posted the rules that his label have for their studio sessions:

It probably goes without saying that most rappers, producers, and engineers have their own studio rules, but it should be noted how necessary these rules must be had. This is the music business, which means the creation of music has some sort of “business” attached to it. In this case, the studio is responsible for the business of making a song to make the artist and label more money. To make a long story short, the sometimes the creative process – no matter how quirky it comes across – is needed in completing the song. Regardless of the content, there is time and money being spent on these sessions and neither party involved wants to see it wasted.

With that said, Mustard’s list is as outlandish as it gets to the public eye. It’s safe to assume there could be studio rules just as weird, if not more than. Some of them do make sense such as not being negative or lazy. When you’re working with a producer, they’re going to offer suggestions on how to make the song the way they see fit. If they own the record or running the session, then you might have to roll with the advice they are giving, no matter how many takes must be done. As for hitting the gym, it’s probably nothing more than trolling, but it also looks like one of the few rules on here that’s believed to be taken seriously. Whatever the case is, the real lesson is always protect your workspace by setting guidelines to get things done.
