Dave Chapelle Questions the Cancellation of DaBaby

Just when you thought the controversy surrounding DaBaby appeared to die down, it might just be picking back thanks to comedian Dave Chapelle. In his latest special, The Closer, Chapelle pondered to his audience as to why DaBaby was chastised for his comments at Rolling Loud Miami as opposed for killing someone, which has been a notable fact apart of his background. At the Rolling Loud show, DaBaby was in the middle of his set, when he told the crowd to make some noise if they didn’t have AIDS or was caught in the parking lot giving same sex felatio. In the wake of that, many people were shocked about what he said on stage. Chapelle humorously expressed how he reacted to the moment.

“You know I go hard in the paint, but even I saw that shit and was like, ‘God damn, DaBaby!’ He pushed the button, didn’t he!” Chapelle said. “He punched the LGBTQ community right in the AIDS. Can’t do that.”

Chapelle also drove the point that DaBaby faced more backlash for his comments than for killing someone in his past. According to Yahoo, the incident happened in 2008, but DaBaby claimed self-defense and was only charged a misdemeanor. Still, Chapelle believes that was not viewed as harsh as his Rolling Loud comments.

“Nothing bad happened to his career. Do you see where I’m going with this? In our country, you can shoot and kill a n***a, but you better not hurt a gay person’s feelings.” Chapelle made some great points and might’ve highlighted the mistrust people have with “cancel culture”. That mistrust comes from being inconsistent with what is deemed a “cancelable” offense and what that looks like. In the case of DaBaby, he got “cancelled” by losing out on a number shows and festivals, but the article points out that he was still working with high profile artists such as Lil Wayne and Kanye West. There’s never been a time limit for how long someone is cancelled for, it’s just based on the emotions of the people at the time, which is messed up, because people can easily hold a grudge about something just as easily as they can forget and forgive. Chapelle is already facing his own cancel reactions, as it’s being reported the National Black Justice Coalition want Netflix to take his special down for those comments. But he has said worse than this before and is still standing. Dave Chapelle is once again proving that he can stir the pot but still engage with you no matter your beliefs.
